An Introduction to “Working the Room”
Meetings and conventions are exciting times to meet new people and strike conversations. However, this can be a difficult task if you’re not accustomed to getting out of your comfort zone. Let’s take a look at how to work the room and find success in a new environment.Who to meet
Try to find people that you do not know; it’s a big mistake to talk to the same people. It’s great to say hello and be cordial, but we are there to meet new people and nourish those that we know. Going back to the new people, identify them, be friendly and try not to sell anything. Make it about them, not you! Ask what they do as opposed to pitching your own services. This is a good rule of thumb in general, that humans naturally like conversation about themselves. These conversations don’t always have to concern business either. If you can find similarities in hobbies or interests, these connections can be a long way and lead to deep discussions. Of course, you can nudge the topic back to business as you see fit. When you connect on both personal and business levels, you’re set up for a long lasting relationship.Meet executives
Make yourself available to the board members and the president of the association. They will notice this and introduce you to others. It’s not often that you have an opportunity to connect with high profile executives, and you will want to make the most of this chance. You don’t want to intrude upon their private space, so simply make yourself available and offer assistance if they need anything. It’s important to gently come across their presence. Be respectful and be yourself. There’s a good chance that the board members are interested in your role, so give a thorough explanation and how you are a valuable asset. Not only will this make your company look good, but you will come across as a genuine individual.

Be selfless
Have an “it’s about them, not about me” attitude. As I keep saying, be friendly rather than flirtatious and become a source of information for people. Ask about their business, how are they doing, how are the kids doing, etc. Remember details about the kids in the baseball league. Did Johnny finally make the team? People will connect with you, and business may come your way because of that. If the person you’re talking to has the same approach, you’ll find yourself in a balanced, healthy conversation. Being selfless also opens up the door to meeting even more people. It’s very easy for others to join in the discussion when you’re not self-absorbed about your accomplishments and role. A more natural, neutral discussion benefits everyone involved, and they might even thank you for moderating it so well. This is the essence of working the room; you’re friendly to everyone and meet the right people at the right times.
